Wigan win first home game since August

Wigan Athletic captain James Perch scored a late winner as his team secured their first home win since August.

Latics defeated Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1 at the DW Stadium to keep their survival hopes vaguely alive. Their last home victory was on 30th August 2014, when they beat Birmingham City 4-0.

However, new manager Gary Caldwell won his first home game since being appointed manager. It was Wigan born player Tim Chow who gave the home side the lead against Brighton.

Chow had been at the club since he was just ten years of age until former manager Malky Mackay recently released him.

Despite this, the midfielder was re-signed by Caldwell and thrust into first team action where he would score on his competitive debut.

The visitors pushed for an equaliser, Kazenga LuaLua and Dale Stephens both looking threatening. It would be Stephens who scored the equaliser for Brighton, after having a several close shots before his goal.

But Latics showed character to gain all three points. The versatile James Perch stabbed home the winner from close range after Marc-Antoine Fortune's deflected shot fell kindly for him.

The win keeps Wigan's hopes of avoiding League One just about alive. Although Rotherham's results must go in their favour and this win needs to be followed up by two more against Wolves and Brentford.
