Wigan linked with Rovers midfielder

The news comes hot on the heels of a rejected bid by Blackburn for defender Andy Todd.

Flitcroft who has served Rovers well after joining them from Manchester City is unhappy with boss Greame Souness giving Barry Ferguson the captaincy after he missed a large part of last season with a broken knee cap.

A source close to Ewood Park told wiganer.net: "Flitty has been a great servant to the club, but he and Souness haven't seen eye to eye over the past few months and this captaincy issue has made Flitty's mind up. He wants to leave."

With Wigan club captain Jason de Vos leaving for pastures new it seems that Jewell has begun the search for a new captain, and Flitcroft seems to fit the bill.

Jackson is the current vice captain and was expected to step into de Vos' shoes for the forthcoming season, but this potential move has spiced the captaincy chase up.

Rift

Souness and Flitcroft had their differences at Christmas last season and the Latics were linked with a move for the midfielder then, but nothing materialised.

This time things seem different. Flitcroft now seems sure that the Latics will be right up there this season. After seeing both their adventurous summer signings, and the fact that a skeleton squad almost made the play-offs last season.

If Flitcroft did move to the Latics then this would leave us with Frandsen, Bullard, Jarrett and Flitcroft all chasing two central midfield spots.

Dutch Defender

On other transfer fronts, it appears that Jewell is keen to bring in a defender to replace de Vos and has targeted an unknown Dutch centre back who is currently plying his trade at FC Utrecht in Holland.

More news on that as we get it.
