Wiekens, 31, is a free agent and would be a welcome signing to bolster the Latics back line after the departure of captain Jason de Vos.

Jewell will face competition for his signature however, and that could come in the form of Ipswich, the destination for de Vos.

The Dutch centre back would be an ideal replacement for de Vos.
