The player, dubbed the Egyptian gladiator, is hot property at the moment; topping the Premiership goal charts after his stunning double at Anfield on Saturday.

With conflicting reports on whether Wigan have first refusal and every man (ager)and his dog rumoured to be interested the club have decided to act fast and aim to extend Zaki's stay in Wigan after next summer.

Zaki, who has seven league and one cup goal to his name, was originally rated at £6.5million by his parent club but that is expected to have at least doubled after the players stunning start to Premier League life.

But Wigan may have to expect a protracted discussion; it took nearly three months to secure Zaki on a season long loan.

His manager Steve Bruce praised his star striker, calling his performance against Liverpool 'scary'.

Bruce said: ""Zaki was absolutely scary - he put in a wonderful performance.

"When you produce a display like that, the last thing you want to happen is to finish on the losing side."

If the club harbour any hope of signing him they must start climbing the table. Saturday's defeat meant Wigan dropped to 14th one point ahead of 18th placed Stoke.
