Whelan wants bigger crowds

The Latics average attendance so far this season is 18,689 meaning that the 25,000 capacity is not in full use for most matches.

With the Latics located in the hotbed of Premiership football, it is hard to attract new supporters, but with the recent success under Steve Bruce, it was thought things may change.

Whelan said: "What does disappoint me is the crowds here at Wigan do not get behind us. They are not here. We only got 18,000 on against Birmingham. Does the town deserve a Premier League team?"

"I can't do any more. I've dropped the prices and they still don't come to watch us. It's very disappointing when we're fighting like Hell. We're doing it year after year and they're still not turning up."

Personally I would point some of the blame at Mr Whelan himself. After a superb first season in the Premiership, the then JJB chairman jumped on the money band-wagon and ramped up the prices.

Subsequently, the fans turned away and despite a reduction in prices for the current season, it has proved hard to win them back. The club is also covered rarely in the media and has a poor advertising campaign ahead of big games.

However, if the current success under Steve Bruce continues then it may mean the Latics are turning people away.
