Whelan set to pass on the reins

No date has been set for the transformation but the news from Whelan has put paid to the long term speculation regarding the future of the club.

The former JJB owner has long said he has the club's best interests at heart, particularly regarding the future. Mr Whelan even went so far as to say that he would sell the club for £1 to the right person.

The Latics chairman and owner said: “I would like to create a dynasty at Wigan Athletic. My grandson is massively keen on football and Wigan Athletic. I’m inclined to let him have a go.

“The time comes for everyone when you need to retire or take a step back because you’re simply not what you used to be.

“What I would like to do is create a dynasty here at Wigan Athletic. My grandson is a bright boy, and is massively keen on football and Wigan Athletic. I’m inclined to let him have a go and I hope that happens.”

During Whelan's time as chairman the club has been promoted three times from the old Third Division all the way to the Premier league. Wigan Athletic supporters are immensely thankful for all that he has given the club and trust he has the best interests of the club at heart with regard to the future.

This was more than illustrated by the Blackburn Rovers fans at yesterday's game who are disgusted with their treatment at the hands of Venkys following the club's sale by the estate of their Jack Walker.
