Whelan calls for stiff punishments

The recent documentary on the BBC and the Lord Stevens report due out next week will highlight the problem of agents and bungs in football.

And although Whelan advocates the use of agents he stresses that it is important to use trusted agents.

He said: "If a manager is found to have taken a bung that should be the end of him in professional football. If a chairman is involved then that club should be relegated.

"We (Wigan) use agents and are happy to do so. If we need a midfielder, we might phone two or three and ask who on their books is available. I just don't like agents trying to move settled players - that goes on and it's not right.

"Taking bungs is unforgivable too."
