Summer preparations already underway

Steve Bruce is already planning for the summer after the transfer window closed on Monday evening. Having sold Emile Heskey, Ryan Taylor, Kevin Kilbane and Wilson Palacios, A sum of £20m was received with around £12m being spent on Hugo Rodallega, Ben Watson, Charles N'Zogbia and the loan signing of Mido.

This leaves around £8m profit which Bruce says will be added to the transfer kitty for the summer where the club should receive a good proportion from television revenue…that is of course if the club survive a relegation battle with over half of the teams in the division battling for safety.

With 32 points already on the board, a drastic change in fortune would see the club relegated but Bruce is confident of survival and also aiming to snatch a European spot if the domestic cup competitions are won by clubs already in European contention.

Speaking to the Wigan Evening Post, Bruce said he didn't expect to bring in as many players as he did.

We've having a break on that front for the next few days, but next week I will have everyone in and assess the areas of the squad we need to strengthen.

"We've now got six months to have a look for the players we want to bring in - there's no time to rest on our laurels.

"I've got to say John Benson and Brenda Spencer worked themselves to a standstill in the transfer window.

"They worked late into the night over the weekend to make sure we got N'Zogbia.

"We aren't the biggest of clubs so we have to get off our backsides and get to work."

"It was really only the last 10 or 12 days of the window when things got busy.

"I thought Rodallega coming in was going to be it, but obviously it wasn't.

"We let five go and brought four in - a couple of the ones we let go were on the fringes of the squad, so I'm pleased with the business we've done.

"There was disappointment after we lost Palacios and Emile Heskey because they'd been terrific for the club.

"But we managed to bring in Rodallega, Ben Watson, Mido and N'Zogbia, who are all exciting players.

"The squad is a lot different now - maybe it's a bit better and stronger then it was, but only time will tell.

"Four of the players who left were out of contract in the summer, so I was able to nick a few quid for them.

"If you look at what we've done, we've brought in £18m or £19m and spent around £12m, so what is left can go into the pot for the summer.

"The number of changes we have made in two or three transfer windows is quite incredible.

"There has been a real turn-about in the 15 months I've been here."

With a long way to go until the end of the season, Bruce will be aiming for the team to finish as high up the table as possible in order to bring in extra revenue and sign the best players available to improve on the current campaign.
