Striker shortage hits Wigan once again

Wigan fans have had mixed emotions with Zaki since the international duty incident and it will not be a huge loss for fans after Zaki failed to score in open play since October. Other targets seem to have been lined up by Bruce with Christian Benitez, Marc-Antoine Fortune and Fraizer Campbell all linked with a move to the DW Stadium among others.

Zaki looks to have picked up knee ligament damage which is a horrific injury for any footballer and this will be a loss for the club for the remaining games, despite the lack of goals. With Zaki injured, The other alternatives are Hugo Rodallega and Mido with Olivier Kapo also available as an emergency striker, a role which Bruce may have to use with Mido also struggling for fitness for the Manchester United game.

Speaking to Setanta, Bruce said

"Zaki will be having scans to assess the extent of his injury, but it certainly looks a nasty one," he said.

"We hope for his sake it's not too serious, but it looked as though he's twisted his knee as he landed.

"From what I've seen anyway, it looks like one of those horrible cruciate ones. We'll know a little bit after the scans."
