Rotherham deducted three points

Wigan Athletic have hope in the Championship relegation battle after Rotherham United were deducted three points.

The Millers were deducted points and fined £30,000 by a Football Disciplinary Commission after being found guilty of fielding an ineligible player.

Farrend Rawson played the full 90 minutes as Rotherham defeated Brighton and Hove Albion 1-0 at the beginning of the month.

Rawson was deemed ineligible because his youth loan from Derby County had expired a day earlier.

A three point deduction leaves them one point above Millwall and two points above Latics in the Championship relegation zone, with two weekends left to play this campaign.

However, Steve Evans' team do have a game in hand at home to struggling Reading next Wednesday, after the Royals were on duty in the FA Cup semi-final.

There is now real hope for Wigan and Millwall after their dismal seasons looked as if they would end with relegation to League One.

Rotherham have until the 1st May to lodge an appeal against the decision.
