Pollitt on his Old Trafford return

Pollitt left United in 1991 and has since played for Oldham, Bury, Lincoln, Darlington, Notts County, Gillingham, Brentford, Sunderland, Chesterfield and Rotherham.

He is now set to re-visit Old Trafford with the Latics, and is looking forward to the game. Pollitt told the Wigan Observer: "My one and only game at Old Trafford was an F.A. Youth Cup game against Mansfield when I was 15.

"The regular goalkeeper was injured and I got called upon to play. We lost the game 2-1 but I'll always remember it. I trained there many a time, but my only competitive game was that once.

"I was at United for three years, two of them as an apprentice and one year as a pro, and I enjoyed it there.

"George Knight, a local scout for United spotted me playing in Bolton and I was there from 1988 to 1991.

"I'd been playing for Bolton Schools and Bolton Lads Club, and must have impressed sufficiently to get taken on by them.

"I played a lot of A and B team matches in the Lancashire League on Saturday mornings, but I never managed to get into the reserves because Jim Leighton, Les Sealey, Gary Walsh and Mark Bosnich were all there.

"We played in various tournaments in Europe which you probably wouldn't have got at any other club at the time, so it was an experience I wouldn't have swapped.

"It's nice to go back there, and as I left in 1991, a lot of things have changed over the years. After leaving United, I went to Bury where Wil McGuiness was the physio and signed for them for a year.

"Gary Kelly was theur first team 'keeper, I played in the reserves and did't really get a look in. Then I went to Lincoln City and it was there where I made my league debut in 1992.

"Looking back, I started at the top with United, went to the bottom and then worked my way back to the Premiership with Wigan."
