Police kick up a stink... again

The GMP has decided to kick up another stink
There was a big row last season over the policing costs at the JJB Stadium and the Latics refused to pay their extortionate bill.

The club was being charged baffling amounts of money for the policing of games.

The two sides had agreed to take the issue to court and the Latics had placed the money in a holding account.

However, the issue has reared its ugly head again as chief constable Steve Thomas opened his mouth on Friday.

Thomas said: "It has been a period of lengthy negotiations, and we believed a compromise was reached at the end of the last season.

"The club agreed to pay for the last four games of last season but there is still an outstanding debt of just under £300,000.

"Unfortunately, we are now in the position that unless the outstanding fees are paid, and a written undertaking is given that the club will continue to pay by August 1 2005, we will not be able to police the matches.

"The club said it is not prepared to pay at this stage. However, it confirmed it will put the money into a holding fund and let the courts decide if the debt should be settled. "
