Paper Talk: Boss wants one final push

Last updated : 27 April 2004 By Paul Farrington
Latics are in sixth place going into the last two games of the season, at Nottingham Forest on Saturday and then at home to West Ham a week on Sunday.

Maximum points from those two would definitely see them book their place, while four points should be sufficient.

Jewell was delighted with his side's performance in Saturday's goalless draw with Sunderland at the JJB Stadium. and now he wants more of the same to ensure a top six finish in the club's first season in Division One.

Jewell said: "If the players give me the same level of performance as they did on Saturday, I can't ask for any more.

"You can't guarantee results but if you can guarantee that type of commitment and energy, I will take my chance with that.

"The lads were actually disappointed they didn't get the win and I had to pick them up in the dressing room.

"I told them the point they got could be vital, who knows. It might not be enough, we'll just have to wait and see."

Latics dropped a place on Saturday, overtaken by West Ham on goal difference who won at Stoke. Crystal Palace also moved level on 70 points with them, but their goal difference is inferior.

Jewell said: "It was a cracking game played in the heat and both sides deserve a lot of credit for keeping going.

"It was a very open first half but in the second we were maybe on top and were disappointed not to get three points.

"I think it's a credit to us that Sunderland were more pleased with a point than we were.

"The first half was too open for my liking, we attacked and then they attacked.
In the second we looked the more likely winners but it wasn't to be.

"I felt it was a decent advert for the First Division and hopefully the people watching at home were impressed.

"If there was one thing which disappointed me out there, it was that we didn't make their keeper work hard enough.

"I think we have had the most shots on target in this league, but our goal ratio isn't what it should be."

Nathan Ellington had a golden opportunity to win the game 12 minutes from time, but put the ball over with an empty goal in front of him.

Jewell said: "The chance wasn't at an easy height for him but he really should have scored it. But I'm not criticising him as he was outstanding."

Sunderland boss Mick McCarthy was pleased with the draw which ended a run of three defeats and kept his side third.

He said: "Wigan have as good a chance as the rest of us of finishing in the play-offs.

"I think they're a good side, and in Ellington and Roberts have two strikers with power, pace and purpose."
