Mitchell, 23, has played more than 50 games for the Latics since emerging from the clubs youth system, but has failed to start a league game this season, making his only appearance in the Carling Cup defeat to Grimsby.

Swindon boss King has approched Latics about Mitchell after his right back Andy Gurney left for Swansea.

Mitchell said: "I got the call from my Manager at Wigan, Paul Jewell, on Wednesday night and he made me aware of Swindon's interest and it went from there."

"I spoke to [Swindon boss] Andy King and we agreed a deal. I came down Thursday afternoon and have trained today.

"With Wigan doing so well it has been difficult to break into the side and I am looking forward to playing first team football again.

"They have brought in some new players and I have been pushed out a little bit. I played a number of games when Wigan got promoted from the old Division Two and I am looking to do the same here."
