The Latics boss is of course the immediate former manager of Swansea City who appointed Brendan Rodgers to suceed Martinez.

Now, Martinez  is delighted to be facing his former club in the Premier League. He told the club's official website: "I've fantastic memories of my time at Swansea City - a great football club; we were involved in what I feel was the key moment in the club's history when we defeated Hull City in 2003 to retain our football league status.

"We could have lost everything that day but won to keep our professional status and during my time there we went through many tough battles."

Martinez is also tipping the Swans for a successful season in the top flight. Latics fans know what it feels like to written off and can share this feeling with their Welsh counterparts this weekend as both clubs look to battle agaisnt the odds for another season.

"I think this season Swansea will be a revelation in the Premier League; they have huge arrogance in their play, great belief and love to keep the ball with lots of threats," added Martinez.

The 38 year old Spaniard is under no illusions as to the expected reception for him at the Liberty Stadium as thousands of Swansea fans express their feeling towards the man formerly known as 'El Gaffer'.
