The Spanish boss has endured a difficult opening two games in the Premiership with heavy home defeat to both Blackpool and Chelsea. A midweek Carling Cup victory over Hartlepool was much needed as the club now face a trip to White Hart Lane and the venue of the 9-1 defeat last season.

When asked about the support he received from the chairman in the week, Martinez told Sky Sprots News: "It is always important, especially nowadays you don't get that sort of backing, but it has never been a surprise.

"My focus and work is day to day to try to correct things we are not doing well and fulfil the potential of the squad.

"I have got huge belief in this group of players and the chairman is always very supportive and is the reason we are in the Premier League so in that respect we are very, very fortunate to have him.

"But we will always put ourselves under massive pressure to try and perform well and reach our full potential.

"It is not about results, it is about reaching the level of performance I feel the squad is capable of which will allow us to go to the next level and improve from last season.

"I feel the squad of players we have got will give us a lot this season."
