The £5.5 million signing has struggled since joining the club from Estudiantes. The pace and power of the Premier League have come as a real shock to Boselli who is set for a six month loan spell with Genoa to help boost his confidence.

Speaking about the move, Latics boss Roberto Martinez said:  "It's not 100 per cent yet. We've been exploring all the possibilities. As we know Mauro has been adapting to the British game.

"At the moment it's been really, really difficult. We need to have Mauro at his best - the Mauro Boselli that we signed and the goalscorer that has got a magnificent reputation in world football.

"At the moment he needs to find a little bit of football happiness. He needs games to allow him to be himself. When you come from South America it can be tricky adapting to the physicality of the Premier League."

Martinez still believes there is a future for Boselli at the club. He added: "At the moment I feel that for Mauro to play five months in Italy or Spain, it will be what he needs, just to make that jump from South America into the Premier League.

"Then we will get the real Mauro Boselli that is going to be a massive asset for our football club.

"We are trying to finalise that deal. At the moment it is not 100 per cent because Mauro has still got a little tear in his hamstring, and that is the reason why he has not been involved in the last two games, but over the next few hours we will find out what is the final destination for him."

Should the move go ahead, the Latics are likely to bring in another forward player to cover for Boselli's absence.
