LISA calls for ticket price review

Just 16,235 fans turned out to see the game, including fewer than 2500 away fans - this coming just a week after the stadium had almost 5000 empty seats for the game against Manchester United –the most glamorous home fixture of the season.

"The new pricing structure is just not working and we would ask Mr Whelan to review it as a matter of urgency," said LISA spokesman Paul Middleton.

"A £10 rise on last season's price for the same game is far too much. While I'm sure the club will argue that it's the going rate and indeed cheaper than some clubs in the Premiership, we have got to remember that while we've come a long way in a short space of time so have the ticket prices and people have been priced out of the bigger games.

"Less than six years ago you could watch a Latics home game for £10 - now it's £35 and I don't know many people whose wages have up such to reflect that rise."

The discontent with the new prices among Latics fans has become clear in recent weeks with many voting with their feet. Fewer than 15000 turned up for the home game with Reading and the attendance for the Manchester United game was less than the average crowd for the whole of last season.

While the Category C games remain priced at £25 many feel that the club is taking advantage of fans for the bigger games. The club have recently introduced some measures aimed at increasing the crowd for the games against Charlton and Aston Villa next month which is a clear indication that they are already expecting a poor crowd.

"It's early doors, but it's worrying," said Paul. "We are a young club and don't have the fan base of many of the other clubs If a Liverpool fan decides not to go to Anfield or a Manchester United fan decides not to go to Old Trafford because of the prices there will always be someone else to fill the seat, but at Wigan we don't have that and we rely heavily on fans turning up for the bigger games. At £35 a head, that just won't happen"
