Jewell plans to make changes

Jewell told the Manchester Evening News: "Maybe it's time to freshen things up a bit. There's still a lot to play for but it could be a good time to try a few things and even vary formations.

"I'm going to give people a go and I possibly do have one eye on next season."

In particular, Jewell singled out praise for Swedish international Andreas Johansson who is starting to have a real impact on the team.

Jewell added: "We've seen Andreas grow in confidence. He adds a touch of class and has a very good technique and vision. He's also very versatile and has lots of good attributes.

"He's a very good pro, possibly starting to believe in himself and he certainly knows where the net is. He can play as a strikeror in midfield and he'll definately play at Newcastle."

Johansson himself is delighted to get the chance to impress in the Premiership and is happy to play anywhere. He said: "I like scoring goals and showing the manager that I want play. Being asked to play up front is no problem for me. It's not an enormous difference to playing in midfield and I used to play as a striker earlier on in my career.

"We still have a chance of getting into Europe and a win over Birmingham last weekend would have helped. I don't really know why it is we just can't win at home right now.

"Sometimes it just happens to work out like that in football. We definately need some more wins because we have five games left and we are wanting to finish as high up the table as we can.

"I was pleased with my goal against Birmingham. It wasn't the most powerful of headers but I managed to put it in the corner and hopefully there will be a few more before the end of the season.

"Newcastle will be tough but we've beaten them in the league and the cup and we can go for a third win. We've taken more points on our travels that at home."
