....looks set to join on a permanent basis, after his loan deal looked to have fallen through.

The 25-year-old spent last season on loan at relegated West Brom, and after being reassured of the players fitness, Wigan manager Paul Jewell is now hoping to agree a fee with Liverpool for the stopper.

Jewell has taken in a number of matches at the World Cup this summer, and he hopes to add a couple of World Cup stars to his midfield: "I've seen some players who have taken my eye at the World Cup, and one could be here at Wigan very soon.

Players rumoured are Hajduk Split's Croatian international midfielder Niko Kranjcar and AS Alkmaar's Dutch international Denny Landzaat. However, it is thought that Ladndzaat has already agreed a move to Spanish club Espanyol.
