Graham Signs

David Graham has joined Per Frandsen at the JJB this summer after he signed or £215,000 from Torquay United.

Jewell said: "Without getting carried away, this is a real marker for us.

"We could never have hoped to compete with Sheffield United and Preston a few years ago, never mind Leeds.

"To win the race to sign him shows how far this club has come and David will give us something extra. There's a little bit of a swagger about him."

"Nathan Ellington and Jason Roberts are about power and pace - with no littles kill - whereas David is a little bit different," he explained.

"He has good vision and can create goals as well as score them."

While Graham himself said: "I'm delighted to have become a Wigan Athletic player and am now really looking forward to joining up with the rest of the lads for pre-season training. Wigan were the first club to make a concrete offer for me and although Leeds came in with a late bid, having spoken to them, I decided that a move here was the best for me.

"I had a great time at Torquay and enjoyed it there very much, but I feel the time is right to move on now. Having helped get the team promoted in my last campaign, I hope I am leaving the club on good terms and I would like to wish the club, the fans and the lads I leave behind all the bery best for next season.

"I don't really know that much about Wigan but I did see a few of their matches on the TV last year and I was very impressed with what I saw. To finish just outside the play-offs in the first year in Division One was a great achievement and hopefully I can help the club build on that this coming season.

"My aim, like everyone elses here, is to bring Premiership football to the JJB Stadium as soon as we possibly can."

"Although I played in an attacking midfield role at Torquay for quite a while, last season I was an out and out striker and that's definitely what I see myself as and where I prefer to play. I scored a lot of goals last season and hope that I can make the step up to Division One and continue that strike rate. I've got a decent touch and can bring other people into the game but it is my goal ratio that I will be judged upon. Therefore, I must quickly adjust to this higher level and then hopefully, continue to take the chances that come my way.

"Obviously my first task is to get in the starting line-up here and though that will be difficult with the quality we already have in attacking positions, I feel that if I do myself justice I will be able to put real presure on those players who will probably start the season in front of me.

"I don't really know anyone at the JJB that well but I've been impressed with the way the transfer has been dealt with and I really look forward to settling in properly. I have played with Lee McCulloch in the Scotland Under 21 set up though and that should help me feel a bit more at home as it is always nice to see a familiar face or two.

"I'm confident I will be able to make the step up and having been schooled at Rangers before moving to Torquay, I feel good about the way my career has steadily built towards the move to Wigan. What I want to do now is repay Wigan's faith in me and show the fans what I can do on the field of play.

"As I said, I'm really looking forward to the start of pre-season training, and the challenge of making the step up two Divisions is one that I'm really looking forward to taking on."
