The 22-year-old impressed for Yeovil Town last season and has alerted the attention of Wolverhampton Wanderers as well as the Latics.

A fee of £250,000 is likely to be involved and PJ looks odds on to get his man with Wolves not being able to offer the youngster regular first team football.

Stansfield has already been capped at semi-proffessional level for England.

Meanwhile the Latics have been back in training this week. Here's what Paul Jewell had to say.

"We've worked them quite hard this morning but we're not overdoing it - it's really just a matter of keeping them ticking over. We've weighed them all this morning and they're all the same weight as when they went away so that's a good sign. To be honest footballers know how to keep themselves fit nowadays and they know that they have to if they're being really professional."

"Ged Brannan's still got a slight hip problem, it's a bit of a trapped nerve I think and Peter Kennedy's had an operation on his cartilage but should now be OK for the start of the season. Like the goalkeepers who'll have their own week long specialist keeper training course, Peter will have a week working on his strength to get himself right again in a specialist environment. Stewart Kerr's back in again and he'll continue to improve following his back problems last season."

Unhappy about ITV
"I've said before that football changed overnight with the ITV Digital fiasco so a lot of players and clubs are in limbo. Not including the youngsters we've signed, we have 17-18 players here and obviously one more if Arjan decides to sign. I've spoken to quite a few people so we shall see, but if I can get two or three more in for when we come back in July I'll be quite happy with that."

He continued: "I know people think that because we're Wigan the ITV thing doesn't affect us, but at the end of the day it's half a million pounds that's lost and that has to come off the budget somewhere."

"I think it gets up the Chairman's nose a little bit when people say the ITV Digital deal doesn't affect Wigan, because that half a million is a lot of money. I think the time has come where we show that we shouldn't be seen as an easy touch in the wages stakes and I think we've shown that with the type of players we've brought in so far."
