De Zeeuw delighted with return

Saturday's game with Charlton will have a big impact on the likelihood of the Addicks survival. A win for the Latics would leave Alan Pardew's men nine points adrift of Wigan. But a win for Charlton could see them just one point away from Sheffield United in seventeenth place.

For De Zeeuw, he is simply happy to have returned to the first team after a frustrating spell on the sidelines.

He said: "It's nice to be playing and training instead of being sat in the gym all the time. I've got my first game back in the team out of the way and I'm looking forward to a nice run of games.

"The Fulham game was probably a nice one to come back in. They were quite static and didn't really try and beat us - they came for a draw. But it was good for concentration because in games like that, it is easy to get caught on the break if you're not careful.

"It was a great feeling being back involved. When I went out to warm-up before the game, I thought 'I've really missed this'. The injury had affected me since November. I played a couple of times with injections. But I wasn't training between matches, I started losing my sharpness, and there came a time when it was just too painful. I just needed to give the foot a rest."

De Zeeuw is likely to partner fellow veteran Matt Jackson at centre back this weekend despite the return from suspension of Fitz Hall.
