Supporters got a little impatient with the football on Saturday as the Latics patiently played their slow, passing, build up play despite being 2-0 down to Spurs.
However the Scottish international defender has pleaded for patience from supporters. He told the Wigan Observer: "I can understand 100% where the fans are coming from. They've grown up on English football, where a crunching tackle gets just as big a cheer as a good pass.
"It's a different mentality on the continent, and that is what the gaffer has tried to introduce here, more of a European approach. At times you can understand the fans' frustrations when it's not going our way.
"But we're trying to play a different kind of football that's patient, that' building from the back. Sometimes we want to get the ball forward as much as the fans want us to. But we are just trying to do it in a more controlled, more considered manner.
"If there's nothing on, in this day and age, you have to be patien and try and keep the ball. Possession is everything in football these days."
There was also a message from the skipper to those 'supporters' who chose to boo and jeer their own team during the first half against Tottenham.
"Some fans obviously want us to get the ball forward quicker, and they showed their frustrations during the game last weekend, which they're entitled to do," added Caldwell.
"The problem is when that negativity starts to affect the players out there on the park. We just need them to stick with us, becuase they showed in the second half when they got right behind us that they can carry us to greater heights - even when we went down to ten men.
"When they do that, the DW really can be a great stadium to play football. We've shown over the last six or seven months we can make it into a real fortnress, and we need to get another run going as quickly as possible."
