The Latics currently have four strikers in their armoury, but Bruce understands the importance of variety and Zaki's presence would certainly add another attacking dimension to the Wigan squad.

His club side Zamalek are not too keen to sell their star asset but are said to be chasing Nottingham Forest striker Junior Agogo as a replacement for the Egyptian international.

Speaking about the transfer, Bruce told the Wigan Evening Post: "With Zaki, talks are ongoing about getting him here. We spotted him at the African Nations Cup in February, and we've been to watch him two or three times since."

Meanwhile, he also confirmed that he hopes to add both Maynor Figueroa and Hendry Thomas to the Latics squad. The Honduran duo are wanted to follow in the footsteps of Wilson Palacios who has been a revelation in the Premier League.

Figueroa has already spent four months with the Latics, making two appearances, the latter of those was his first Premiership start as he starred in the final day match with now Champions Manchester United.

Bruce added: "We're definitely hoping to do something with Figueroa and Thomas. Figueroa did really well with us last season and I think he benefited from being among the squad for two or three months.

"He did well enough to be brought back over here again. Hopefully we can do something with Thomas too. Everyone tells me he's a fantastic player and we've done our homework on him.

"There are some good players in Central and South America. Anyone who saw Colombia play against the Republic of Ireland last week would have been impressed - they were fantastic."
