Bruce regrets loaning Zaki

A permanent transfer was talked about, but with Zaki untried in the Premieship Bruce opted for the loan option. He said: "We spoke about a deal in principle, but there's nothing officially in writing.

"If Zaki keeps scoring the price will go up, we know that. We've paid a loan fee of around £1.25m and I believe there's another £500,000 to be paid if he scores 10 goals.

"When we went for him in the summer, the price was too high, so we went down the road we did. Looking back, it would be nice if he was ours now, but it's good still to have the chance to sign him."

No-one can blame Bruce for his decision. With Zaki flopping in the Russian league paying a record transfer fee could have spectacularly blown up in his face.

Bruce also dismissed rumours Zaki could be off in January. He added: "There's no getting out of the deal - Zaki can't go anywhere in January. The only place he can come to is us, thank the Lord!"
