Leighton Baines: Has his feet firmly on the ground but big ambitions for the Latics
Despite a season struggling at the wrong end of the table, the young Scouse full-back expects the club to perform much better next time round and is hoping the Latics can emulate local neighbours Blackburn Rovers and Bolton Wanderers.

The 22 year old said: "Bolton and Blackburn are good clubs for us to look at. They came from the lower divisions like us and have established themselves. This club has got massive potential to move on and try and get into those European places over the next couple of years.

"There will be a lot more players who will have a look at us in the summer and want to come here. This is a massive time for the club. We'll be able to kick on next year with more money behind us. Newcastle have been linked with a summer swoop for the 22-year-old. But he believes working under Paul Jewell offers him the perfect platform to move onto the senior international stage.

"I've had a good relationship with the manager and my family is happy here. If I was ever unhappy it would be a problem, but that's never happened. If you want ambitions to play for your country then you need to be playing in the Premier League and be playing in a team that's doing well.

"Anyone who has played in the Premiership doesn't want to play anywhere else again. When you're not playing for a team in Europe or in the higher end of the league it's always going to be difficult to play for England."

Baines appears to be a refreshing change to the modern footballer sterotype. His modest attitude and hard-working ethic are values that cannot be understated in the current footballing climate.

It is already very clear that he has a bright future in the game and supporters will certainly be hoping that is with the Latics in a successful side.
