Carlton Cole scored his third goal in his last two games for England Under-21s as they beat Austria in their European Championship qualifier.

The striker latched on to a cross from Gary O'Neil before striking the ball past Ramazan Ozcan to open the scoring.

England almost doubled their lead after the break when Calum Davenport headed a corner across goal, but Ozcan saved Anton Ferdinand's point-blank header.

But with full-time looming Darren Bent made it two with a low drive.

The game was Peter Taylor's first competitive outing in his second spell in charge of the Under-21s.

Taylor handed debuts to Wigan left-back Leighton Baines and Tottenham centre-back Calum Davenport, but it was the in-form Cole who caught the eye early on.

The striker, on loan at Aston Villa from Chelsea, went close in the opening minutes but his shot was blocked.

Jon Stead then dispossessed Thomas Lechner but the Blackburn forward's strike lacked power.

England broke the deadlock after half an hour when Cole brought down O'Neil's cross and sent a low drive into the corner of the net.

Austria's Stefan Kulovits almost profited from a mistake by Davenport shortly before the interval but his shot was eventually cleared.

After the break the best chances were created by England.

Cole had a shot cleared off the line and forced a save from Ozcan as the visitors pushed for their second goal.

And Stead headed narrowly over the bar before being replaced by Bent, who added the team's deserved second after 89 minutes.

The Ipswich player collected the ball from Nigel Reo-Coker before driving the ball past Ozcan.
