Unfairly Dropped
Wigan manager Paul Jewell has warned his side they could find themselves in a relegation fight if they are not careful.

"I can't believe we lost," said a bewildered Jewell. "We dominated the game but lost to two set pieces. We could be in a relegation fight if we are not careful."

The first set piece to do damage came in the 18th minute when Darren Ferguson crossed from the right, the ball went over the Wigan defensive wall and Craig Faulconbridge ran round to put a cracking shot past the stranded John Filan.

Despite the setback Wigan came back strongly and Gary Teale was a constant menace down the right flank, but his low crosses were squandered by Lee McCulloch and Peter Kennedy. It took a brilliant save however, in the 43rd minute by Marius Rovde who went flying to keep out Andy Liddell's shot which looked an equaliser all the way.

Wigan kept up the action in the second half and keeper Rovde was the saviour again, this time to deny Tony Dinning.

In the 57th minute Wigan must have realised it was going to be one of those days. McCulloch took a snap shot which hit the foot of the Wrexham post and went along the goal-line and to safety.

Should Have Walked
Wigan were caught on the break and it was a costly foul by Ged Brannan on Lee Trundle. Stephen Thomas floated the ball over the Wigan wall and this time it was central defender Dennis Lawrence who was in the clear to put the ball past Filan from two yards and put Wrexham on the road to victory.

Teale saw his shot tipped over the bar in the 86th minute but then came two escapes for Wigan with Filan denying Trundle and then keeping out a close range shot from the lively Faulconbridge.

Wrexham have now gone four games without defeat in their bid to get out of the relegation wood.

Manager Denis Smith said, "It was a good win and we are now confident. We did well on the break and that is exactly what we have been doing in training and it came off today."

If we keep this form up, we'll be playing Bury again next season.
