Unbeaten Wigan Athletic once again made the Championship sit up and take notice of their Premiership credentials with a clinical 4-1 demolition of Coventry City at the JJB Stadium.

Despite not firing on all cylinders, especially in the first half when they were distinctly second best, Paul Jewell's men still had the power and craft to make it 15 games without defeat, ten goals in a week and a four-match winning run.

They took the lead after just 14 minutes in when midfielder Alan Mahon hammered home an exquisite 20-yard volley, with Nathan Ellington having wasted an earlier chance to give his side the lead.

Coventry deservedly drew level just past the half-hour mark when Johnson headed home past John Filan.

The visitors were the better side in the first 45 minutes but couldn't add to their tally and after the break they simply had no answer to a rampant Wigan outfit.

David Graham put the home side ahead seven minutes into the second half as he ran on to a Jason Roberts pass before coolly rolling his shot beyond Sky Blues goalkeeper Luke Steele.

Ellington extended the advantage after Steele had made an excellent save to divert a Mahon blockbuster away for a corner.

Jimmy Bullard played in the resulting corner and Ellington rose at the back post to head home powerfully to make it 3-1.

The Latics should have added a fourth 12 minutes from time after Roberts was brought down by Steve Staunton, who was red-carded as a result.

Roberts though lost his cool from the spot and sidefooted his 12-yard effort over Steele's crossbar.

However, substitute Michael Flynn extended the winning margin in the final minute as he headed Leighton Baines' cross past an overexposed Steele.
