Wigan preserved their record as the Championship's only unbeaten side but they were given an almighty scare by a hard-working Burnley outfit in a dour game played in atrocious conditions at the JJB Stadium.

The visitors came with the sole aim of stifling Wigan's attacking threat and the fact that they restricted the high-flyers to just three shots on target speaks volumes for the success of their tactics.

The visitors themselves had just a single shot on target, a first-half effort from Ian Moore that barely tested Wigan keeper John Filan as any thoughts of an electrifying Lancashire derby quickly evaporated.

In driving wind and rain both side struggled to cope with the conditions, but it was the home side who probably had the better chances in a game that will be remembered for a staggering 45 free-kicks.

Apart from Moore's first-half effort the best chance probably fell to Wigan's Jason Roberts five minutes before the break, when a neat move involving Leighton Baines and Jimmy Bullard ended with Bullard firing over a low cross, but Roberts flicked inches wide.

The second half saw Roberts go close again but Burnley will be kicking themselves for not claiming all three points with two half-chances in the dying minutes.

Firstly Graham Branch headed over from close range following a well worked free-kick and then in injury time Moore blasted high and wide from no more than ten yards with the goal gaping.

But a draw was certainly a fair result with both teams happy with the outcome.
