Wigan boss Paul Jewell paid tribute to his in-form side after watching them claim their eighth successive victory at the JJB Stadium.

A goal in each half from winger Gary Teale and record signing Nathan Ellington ended the challenge of brave Swindon and Jewell said: "In the second half we played as well as we have done for some time.

"We grew in confidence after the opening goal and I am pleased that we created so many chances but we still had to battle against a big strong side." His Swindon counterpart Andy King acknowledged that Wigan were the better side but made a fierce attack on the state of the JJB Stadium pitch.

King said: "This is a magnificent football club but it's a pity they can't get the pitch to match the surroundings.

"It must be a real hindrance for poor Jewell because it's a big leveller and it's an atrocious surface on which to play football." Swindon had few chances against a rampant Wigan side that maintained its seven point advantage at the top of the Second Division.

But they were unlucky in the dying seconds when defender Alan Reeves saw a cracking volley headed off the line by Wigan's Matt Jackson.

The home side took full advantage of their good fortune as the ball broke to substitute Andy Liddell, who raced the length of the field before squaring the ball to Ellington to tap home the clincher.
