In form Wigan surged to the top of the second Division after a hard fought win against stubborn Stockport at the JJB Stadium.

But the home side once again had their fans biting their nails as they fell behind to an early goal from the visitors.

Luke Beckett gave the visitors a fourth minute lead when he pounced on a mistake by defender Nicky Eaden to fire home from eight yards .

The home side then proceeded to miss a bagful of chances, Nathan Ellington and Neil Roberts both squandering golden openings.

But Ellington made amends four minutes after the restart when he powered home a header from Gary Teale's perfect centre.

Then on the hour it was Robert's turn to get on the score sheet with his first goal of the season, when he cracked home a thumping volley after Lee McCulloch's centre had caused havoc in the Stockport defence.

The home side then rode their luck as Stockport fought their way back into the match and the Latics had keeper John Filan to thank for keeping their lead intact.

But at the other end Stockport keeper Lee Jones denied substitute Andy Liddell with a great save, as the home side made it an impressive eleven games unbeaten
