Wigan 0 Plymouth 1

Plymouth produced one of the shocks of the second division season with a hard-earned but thoroughly deserved victory at the home of the runaway leaders.

With the home side needing nine points from seven games to clinch the Division Two title, this seemed a formality against a mid table Plymouth side that in theory had nothing to play for but pride.

But pride counted for a lot as the visitors produced a top notch display to give the home side the run around.

A one sided first half saw the visitors in total command and John Filan had to make a great save after only two minutes to deny the lively Lee Hodges.

Wigan's defence looked anything but certain as the visitors frequently created openings but couldn't add the finishing touch.

Andy Liddell created Wigan's best opening on the half hour but saw his shot blocked for a corner but the inevitable Plymouth goal came four minutes later.

The lively Marino Keith rode his luck as he eased past a challenge from skipper Matt Jackson, and when his shot came in from 25 yards it took a wicked deflection and although Filan managed to tip the ball on to the post the ball nestled in the bottom corner.

The goal did little to shake the home side out of their lethargy and it was a similar pattern in the second half with the visitors creating the openings and the home side, who didn't have a single shot on target throughout the afternoon, struggling to get their game going.

Plymouth should have added a second just after the hour when Keith beat the offside trap only for Filan to deny the lively striker.

At the final whistle the Argyle fans and players celebrated a notable triumph, and Wigan's promotion party will have to remain on hold for at least a week.
