Ipswich 2 Wigan 1

Wigan boss Paul Jewell has admitted that the performance was not good enough. He told the club's official site: "Although we started quite well and created a few chances, I have to be honest and say that I thought the better team won on the night. I've just said to the players that I'm disappointed with them as I don't think we really played as a team this evening - especially in the second half.

"If you look at all the great sides, they are made up of great individuals playing as a team with no-one being bigger than the team. Tonight I just felt we had too many people playing as individuals and therefore in the second half Ipswich were better than us. It's vital that the players don't get caught up believing what is written about them in the press and at times it was as if some of them did tonight and that's not on. We didn't win enough individual battles, we didn't win enough tackles and we didn't keep the ball well enough.

"Because we didn't keep the ball well enough our defence was always under pressure in the second half and I felt sorry for them because the ball just kept coming back for them to defend over and over again. After Bainesy's brilliant goal I thought we might build on that but we didn't and we let them back into the game. I am really disappointed because we are much than we have shown tonight and the lads now need to bounce back from this over Christmas.

"This was a big game tonight but in no way will it be decisive because, as Ipswich know as well as we do, we have only just passed the half way mark this season and there is a long way to go. However, even though that is the case, we need to be much better than we have been this evening if we are to have any ambitions of pushing on from here to claim an automatic promotion place."

What I found disappointing was the need for PJ to play Ellington on the left flank and go with Bullard, McCulloch and Mahon in the centre of the field. Whenever this has been operated in the past the result has never gone well, and the Duke has a poor game.

This was again the story with Roberts pulling up trees up front to try and get anywhere.

The game started brightly with both sides going for it, and the Latics had the better of the early chances. Two falling to Gary Teale and two to JR.

However the team seemed to retreat and go defensive which was disappointing. The players in the team at the moment are not geared towards a defensive performance.

Wigan Athletic conceed so few goals because we are normally the attacking team in a game. Afterall, attack is the best form of defence.

On a positive note. I was "chuffed to pieces" with Baines' goal. Top quality, goal of the season award has just been won, it is in storage, awaiting collection at the end of the season.

The other main positive for myself was the performance of lone front man Jason Roberts. At the moment he is absolutely outstanding. His work for the team is top draw, it was just a shame that he got booked.

Main disappointments are the defensive style of play adopted and the performances of Ellington and Teale.

Why did Flynn not replace twinkle toes on the flank? He did more in five minutes against Gillingham than Teale did all game, while Ellington was at fault for the first Ipswich goal, his marker escaped his attention and did very little going forward.

Filan takes blame for the last goal in my opinion. He was in no mans land, he didn't go atnd collect the ball, neither did he stay on his line. He ran halfway out and let the ball over his head.

Anyway. I can't grumble, I would have taken second at Christmas. Let's hope PJ brings in the players he wants and we get some good results, starting with Derby and Burnley over Christmas.
