Alan Mahon: Got Wigan's Goal
The last time the Latics advanced beyond the third round was in 1986/87 when they reached the 6th round before getting knocked out by Leeds United 2-0 at Springfield Park.

A host of first team regulars were rested. Jimmy Bullard, Leighton Baines, Ian Breckin, Nicky Eaden, Nathan Ellington and Lee McCulloch all sat this one out. Jimmy Bullard and Ian Breckin did make appearances as second half substitutes.

The Latics back four consisted of (left to right), McMillan, Jackson, Thome, Eaden, and they had John Filan in goal behind them.

In midfield, Mahon and Teale were on the flanks with Whalley and Flynn in the centre. Roberts and Graham were the strikers.

Alan Mahon, making his first start since the Burnley defeat, put the Latics in the lead with his sixth of the season after half an hour.

The Latics, who lost to Derby 2-1 on Boxin Day, colapsed. Indigo Idakez equalised for the Rams nineteen minutes from time before Junior snatched a winner with just fourteen minutes left on the clock.

It was Junior's first goal for Derby since April. The Brazilian striker has spent time on loan at Rotherham United (Wigan's next opponents) and was told midweek that he did not have a future at Derby. County boss Burley had told him that was the fourth choice striker behind Smith, Rasiak and Peschisolido. Maybe he has changed his mind!

Emerson Thome has a chance to snatch a replay at the death, but his effort was saved fantastically by Lee Camp.

The Latics are left to focus on the League and chasing promotion after this defeat.
