Teymourian drags worried Wigan into the mire

Andranik Teymourian established himself as one of the week's more popular Iranians - with Bolton fans at least - after his first goals in the Premiership restored his side to fifth place in the table and deepened Wigan's relegation worries ahead of the run-in.

The Latics had been in front after half an hour through Emile Heskey but their inability to hold on to a lead has been the bane of their season and proved their undoing again. Nicolas Anelka equalised before half-time and set the platform for a second-half comeback in which Teymourian, given his first start for almost two months, found the target twice in the space of five minutes

The Latics' worries looked to be easing when Emile Heskey opened the scoring with his 100th league goal on 36 minutes.

But Nicolas Anelka drew Bolton level a minute before the break to heap the pressure back on Paul Jewell's men.

Iran star Teymourian then took centre stage to boost Bolton's hopes of a Champions League spot.

Heskey joins the 100 club but Wigan still falter

When it comes to fighting a relegation battle, Wigan Athletic's previous experience will stand them in good stead. So suggested Latics manager Paul Jewell in his programme notes, but that was before his team were undone by the man who looks likely to become the first Iranian footballer to have a successful career in the Premiership.

There was nothing noticeably nervous about the way Wigan started the game, putting the visitors under sufficient pressure to force three corners in the opening three minutes. From the second, taken by Ryan Taylor, Lee McCulloch timed his run well enough to reach the low ball ahead of his marker, but the Latics' longest-serving player glanced his shot wide.

Defeat was a disaster for Wigan boss Paul Jewell, who had seen his men start with more purpose and take a 31st-minute lead through Emile Heskey.

Austrian midfielder Paul Scharner crossed into the six-yard box for Heskey to pounce with a shot which hit Bolton full-back Nicky Hunt and bobbled over the line.

Jewell's Wigan are deep in the relegation mire after back-to-back defeats and he said: "We're the best in the league at losing from a winning position. But it's still in our hands with six games to go."
