Charlton 1 Wigan 0

Wigan were far from impressed after being dragged back into the scrap. Skipper Arjan De Zeeuw claimed: "I don't think they had a shot on our goal until the penalty. That decision was a real kick in the teeth. None of their players appealed."

Boss Paul Jewell had to bite his tongue over ref Peter Walton's performance. He said: "I don't know what the penalty was given for. I've been down to see the FA too often already.

"My wife has told me to keep quiet because there's no groceries in the house and I can't afford another fine."

Charlton give fans plenty to shout about

Clubs in the relegation zone are usually miserable places, racked with tension and fearful for the future. It says everything about the desperate mood in the England camp last week that Luke Young admitted it had been "a relief" to come back to Charlton.

The biggest disparity, for Young, was the attitude of the fans. Charlton's were vocal and supportive. Both managers suggested they may have influenced Peter Walton's decision to award the soft 85th-minute penalty by which Darren Bent won the match.

Bent has Charlton going in right direction

The game degenerated as a spectacle as both sides' nerves began to fray. Charlton's need to win was greater but they produced nothing more than a weak header by Darren Bent from a corner which went wide. Folan had Wigan's best chance when he managed to control the ball on the edge of the penalty area and, inexplicably, a posse of defenders moved away and allowed him to shoot.

Luckily for Charlton, he fired over the crossbar. Darren Bent, on the other hand, held his nerve and so now we have a genuine battle to avoid the drop.
