United lifted by Rooney reaction

After six matches without a win, Paul Jewell, the Wigan Athletic manager, has more pressing concerns than the form of the England forward, but he needed little encouragement to stick up for a fellow Scouser after what he had witnessed.

“In my opinion he's the best player in the world right now,” Jewell said. “He showed his true colours today. When it was 2-1 he had a chance to score, but instead he passed it to (Ole Gunnar) Solskjaer. That typified it. He doesn't want to get his name in the papers for scoring. All he cares about is his team winning and still being top of the league.”

Rooney back on Form

Paul Jewell turned away from the sublime when he was trying to sum up the essence of Wayne Rooney.

"I don't take any pleasure in saying 'I told you so'," he said, referring to his pre-season comments that 2006-07 would be a tough challenge. "In this game night doesn't always follow day and just because we did well last year doesn't mean we'll do well this. Being a realist, it will be an achievement if we're still in this league next year."

THE big man is back.

It is the phrase Wayne Rooney used as he entered England's World Cup base after being given the OK by the docs after injury. He could easily have said it again as he exited down the tunnel at Wigan on Saturday.

No goals, but what a performance. It was just a pity there were only just over 20,000 to see it.

Rooney back in the groove to put United on their Beat

Barely four minutes were on the clock when Patrice Evra was penalised for handball 30 yards out and after Denny Landzaat and Kevin Kilbane had tapped the free-kick back, Leighton Baines comprehensively beat Edwin Van der Sar with a blistering drive.

Baines could find himself in the England squad soon, on the strength of his last two under-21s performances and the fact that Ashley Cole will be suspended for the next competitive fixture, though on this occasion the left-back's defending was not as impressive as his shooting.
