What the Papers Say

After Jimmy Bullard gave Wigan the lead with an amazing volley from outside the area, The Latics squandered a one goal lead for the fifth game in a row. After Angel's equaliser, two goals in four minutes from Camara was enought to claim the three points, despite Liam Ridgewell setting up a tense finale.

Here is what a selection of National newspapers said about Wigan's first home victory since Boxing Day of last year.

The Sun

Wigan 3 Aston Villa 2

Henri Camara's double shot Wigan straight back into the Euro race.

The Latics striker struck twice in the second alf as Paul Jewell's men secured their first home league win since Boxing Day. The Victory also took them to 51 points - a target Jewell admitted he thought was beyond them at the start of the season.

Wigan are now just three points behind sixth-placed Blackburn, although Rovers have a game in hand.

Jewell said: "We have nowclaimed 51 points, done the double over Aston Villa and we areeight in the league with three games to go, which is a wonderful achievement for us."

Jewell has last laugh on underachieving Villa

If Wigan Athletic's superior league position was not humiliation enough for the Aston Villa manager, he was further embarrassed last night at the JJB Stadium when the Barclays Premiership newcomers completed a memorable double over their more fêted opponents.

O'Leary had irked Jewell by telling him, somewhat condescendingly, that he hoped Wigan would “stay up”, but while the Liverpudlian is not the kind of man to gloat, he could barely contain his delight This was Wigan's first win at home since Boxing Day and kept alive their hopes of qualifying for the Uefa Cup. Villa, on the other hand, have not won on their travels since February 4, have conceded 14 goals in their past four away games and are still not mathematically safe, however improbable relegation is. More likely is the prospect of O'Leary being out of a job come the summer.

Bullard's moment of magic highlights Villa deficiencies

Paul Jewell was welcomed to the Premiership with a firm handshake and a patronising platitude from David O'Leary last summer. "I hope you stay up," said the Aston Villa manager who, in fairness, was probably articulating the thoughts of most of his peers at a pre-season gathering of the country's finest coaches. "I hope you do too," came the withering reply. Today, only Jewell no longer hopes for salvation

Wigan had taken the lead in their previous four games, and having failed to win any it was no surprise Jewell used his programme notes to bemoan his side's inability to finish off opponents. Those concerns resurfaced in the 53rd minute when Juan Pablo Angel converted a left-wing cross from Gabriel Agbonlahor but, for once, Wigan produced a convincing response. Two goals in four minutes from Camara should have ended the contest only for Wigan's vulnerability to enable Liam Ridgewell to ensure a nervous finale.

O'Leary' assistant, Roy Aitken, said: "We were in a position to win the game but once again we gave two slack goals away." A fine effort in disguising the truth.

Jewell delighted as Wigan stay in European hunt

Wigan boss Paul Jewell was relieved to see Henri Camara back on the scoresheet to revive the club's hopes of European football for next season.

Camara scored two goals in four minutes during an explosive second half as Wigan finally won a Barclays Premiership match at the JJB Stadium for the first time since Boxing Day.

The victory lifted a previously-faltering Wigan up to eighth in the table to leave them trailing sixth-placed Blackburn by three points - with Rovers at Birmingham.

Camara took his tally to 11 for the season with his brace to leave Jewell commenting: "He certainly celebrated after his first goal!"
