What the Papers say

It was meant to be the day Wigan Athletic announced themselves to the footballing world by beating Manchester United and lifting the Carling Cup trophy. Sadly, that was just a pipe dream.

Here is what the national papers had to say about Wigan's first appearance in a major domestic Cup Final.

The Sun

Man Utd 4 Wigan 0

Wayne Rooney's double led United to Carling Cup glory- as three goals in six minuted sunk unlucky Wigan.

The latics showed the graft but not the craft that has stunned the Premiership this season- while United displayed such finishing power that the decision to pick Luis Saha ahead of Ruud Ban Nistelrooy was utterly justified.

Wigan chief Paul Jewell on the heaviest defeat in League Cup final history- in the Latic's first game of such stature.

But Fergie celebrated winning a humble piece of sliverware that has saved their season and probably his job for at least a 21st term.

The Daily Mail

Rooney and Red Devils romp to Victory

Manchester United ruthlessly squashed Wigan's dreams at the Millenium Stadium as they romped to the biggest League Cup final victory in history.

Wayne Rooney did most of the damage with a sensational display.

The brilliant England man scored twice, headed against the bar and proved totally unstoppable with a majestic performance which deservedly saw him crowned man of the match.

Wigan were urged on by 27,000 noisy supporters, an amazing achievement in itself given the Latics were a non-league outfit less than 30 years ago.

The Times

The American Dream

Thrilled at watching their £800million corporation trounce Wigan Athletic to win the Carling Cup yesterday, the Glazer brothers decided to join the party. Down they went to the jubilant Manchester United changing room, where they were soaked in champagne by Wayne Rooney et al.

It is hard to know which would have seemed more ridiculous a few years ago, United being owned by American Businessmen, or Sir Alex Ferguson gazing fondly at the League Cup.

The Independent

First Silverware for Rooney

Manchester United claimed their first trophy in two years in winning the Carling Cup final against Wigan Athletic yesterday. It was also their first trophy under the ownership of the Glazer family and- more importantly, peraps- a first for Wayne Rooney.

Ferguson said the 4-0 scoreline "was abit unfair" for Wigan. "They had a good day, they had some good chances. They never stopped having a go and that is to do with Paul Jewell's attitude to management."

The Daily Star

Neville says League Cup win can herald start of new era

While no-one at Manchester United is claiming that Sunday's League Cup final victory is the greatest achievement in the club's history, skipper Gary Neville believes it is an important step on the road to more significant success in the future.

Knocked out of the Champions League in the group stages, eliminated from the FA Cup by Liverpool, and trailing Chelsea by 15 points in the race for the Premier League title, the League Cup was the only trophy left for United to win this season.

but thie emphatic 4-0 victory over Wigan Athletic was well-deserved and Neville, among others, was delighted.
