Jewell :: True grit
The gritty 2-1 victory over Stockport County stretched the Latics' unbeaten run to 10 games and toppled Cardiff from pole position.

And the Wigan boss had double reason to celebrate after the final whistle, revealing that the club had signed Nicky Eaden from Birmingham City.

The free transfer deal, finalised on Friday evening, will see the 29-year-old right-back playing at the JJB Stadium for the rest of this season and the next two.

Eaden said: "I am very pleased to sign. Since coming in at the start of the month, it struck me that this was a good, honest club with plenty of ambition.

"Wigan have looked after me and have given me this length of a deal which I am more than happy to sign."

Nathan Ellington and Neil Roberts were on target for Latics, who came from a goal behind to clinch the three points against Carlton Palmer's men, making their first visit to the JJB Stadium.

Stockport's high-flying striker Luke Beckett had put the Edgeley Park team in front after four minutes.

With a selection dilemma on his hands, Jewell gave Roberts a vote of confidence by leaving seven-goal marksman Andy Liddell on the bench after his return from suspension. The Wigan boss admitted it had been a tough decision but said he was pleased to see Roberts hit the target after missing several earlier chances.

Jewell said: "Any decision to leave anyone out is what you get paid for.

"Robbo has worked extremely hard. I couldn't believe it when he missed a chance. The crowd started singing for Andy Liddell but then he struck a great goal in.

"If you saw the players' reaction, everyone was pleased because he has deserved more than that.

"If things had been the other way round, Lids would have expected to stay in the side.

"Andy has done brilliantly for me. But the way I had success at Bradford was because if you got in and did alright, whoever you were, you stayed in.

"People who are out of the team have to knuckle down in the right way and I have got everybody doing that."

He added: "Let's not make this an Andy Liddell/Neil Roberts issue because Wigan Athletic is the most important thing – more than any individual. The players are all pulling as one.

"Everyone who is not in the team is disappointed but I want them to react in the right way in training and we have got that. It is a good place to be at the moment.

"Everyone is together. I have been in and out of teams and it is difficult but successful teams have a squad. We haven't got the biggest squad but we have some decent quality in it.

"I had to leave Scott Green out of the substitutes and he was fit."

Jewell paid tribute to the determination of his team who had to claw their way back after going a goal behind for the third consecutive game.

He said: "I thought we thoroughly deserved the win. We went behind to a farcical goal from our point of view. But I felt we kept going and we didn't let our heads go down.

"I didnít go in and take the paint off the walls at half-time because I thought we had done alright. I felt we were better than 1-0 down. We started the second half brightly and we could have had more goals.

"In the last 20 minutes we were a bit edgy but that was probably because we have thrown away leads in the last two home games. When we scored the second, I thought 'We don't want to lose this one' but for all that, they didn't really look like scoring."
