Signings bid frustrated

The Latics manager is after a couple of loan signings to ensure he had enough bodies available for the final push towards promotion and the Second Division title.

But enquiries for various targets have yet to be met with a positive reply and Jewell has warned supporters he may have to do with what he has got for the remaining seven games.

A back-up keeper for John Filan is high on his list of priorities, although finding someone prepared to sit on the bench and wait for a chance has been a problem for much of the season.

Jewell is also seeking to bolster outfield positions, but is keeping his cards close to his chest when it comes to discussing targets.

He said: "I would like to bring in one or two players on loan to freshen it up but it is not easy and they have to be the right people.

"I have made a few phone calls and asked about one or two players but they haven't been available.

"What I'm not going to do is bring someone in just for the sake of it – that has always been my attitude.

"But while nothing has happened yet, something might crop up and the situation could change. If we don't sign anyone, the beauty of our squad is that we have a number of players who can play in different positions if necessary.

Latics have until 5pm tomorrow to register any new signings with Football League headquarters in Preston.

Meanwhile, striker Nathan Ellington will have a minor operation to correct a shoulder injury once the season is over.

And there is a chance that the foot injury which has troubled skipper Jason de Vos since Christmas might also need summer surgery.

Neither player will have any trouble seeing out the rest of the campaign, but the club want to ensure they are fully fit in time for the start of next season.

De Vos has had to cut down on the amount of training he does to make sure he is fit for games, although Ellington is still able to train as normal.

Jewell said: "The Duke has a shoulder injury which needs rectifying in the summer.

"It's an injury which doesn't bother him for a while and then suddenly starts bothering him.

"As for Jason, he has had a problem with his foot since December and often needs ice on it at half-time and full-time.

"He doesn't tend to train to make sure he can get through the matches, and he might need surgery in the summer as well."

Latics Reserves are in action tonight at Stockport County (kick-off 7pm).
