Seven Up

A second half header from Jason de Vos gave Latics a 1-0 win at Port Vale yesterday to get the Christmas fixtures off to a flier.

The winning run stretches back to the start of November and beat the previous record of six wins put together in the 1987/88 season.

More importantly, the victory at Vale Park sent Jewell's side seven points clear at the top of the Second Division.

Promotion rivals Cardiff lost 2-0 at Luton and Bristol City were held to a goalless draw by Plymouth, both in early kicks-offs, and Latics went into yesterday's clash knowing they could open up a healthy gap.

A delighted Jewell said: "We knew the Cardiff and Bristol City scores before our game and sometimes that doesn't help.

"But we went out there and were the better team, although it was a hard fought win on a heavy pitch and we had to grind it out.

"I told the players beforehand that it could be similar to the Huddersfield game with a set-piece settling it.

"Luckily for us it turned out that way and I'm well pleased with how things are going.

"We're not that attractive to watch at the moment but we are hard to beat – perhaps I'm being ultra-critical saying that.

"It was never going to be easy going to Port Vale because they've been our bogey side recently.

"Since I have been at Wigan, we have been beaten 1-0 by them three times so it was nice to put things right.

"In the first half we were a little bit sloppy and at times didn't make full use of the big pitch.

"But after we scored our goal we had a few more chances because they had to throw caution to the wind.

"De Vos was our scorer again and he is entitled to get on the end of a few set-pieces because he's 6ft 4ins!

"The Duke took up a good position in front of their keeper to leave him unsighted and it worked well.

"We've now got a seven point lead at the top and I have got to admit it's nice being up there.

"But it will be a lot nicer to be up there in May!"

McMillan: Could sit out the Swindon game
The squad were back in training today ahead of tomorrow's home game with Swindon and Jewell was running the rule over their fitness before selecting his side.

He's definitely without Jason Jarrett who serves a one-match suspension and Paul Mitchell is his likely replacement in the centre of midfield.

Left-back Steve McMillan is the main injury doubt after he was substituted at half-time yesterday with a sore neck.

If he doesn't recover in time, Peter Kennedy will play at left-back with Lee McCulloch starting on the wing.

Jewell said: "McMillan ricked his neck in the first-half and we'll have to see how he is.

"Peter Kennedy dropped back into his position yesterday for the second half and did well, while Lee McCulloch looked lively when he came on.

"I might make one or two changes because it's a lot to ask players to play two games in three days.

"Swindon will be difficult opposition because they might well come here to frustrate us and put people behind the ball, just like Huddersfield did recently."
