ROVERS ALERT!

But the boss was still preaching a cautious note ahead of tonight's home clash with Tranmere Rovers, warning his players not to take their eye off the ball as a place in the First Division moves into sight.

Latics go into the game against Ray Mathias' side 15 points clear of nearest challengers Crewe and with three consecutive wins under their belt.

Three more points this evening would take them on to the 82 point mark, just 10 behind the target Jewell set his squad at the start of the campaign.

He said: "I've heard people talking about what we'll do in Division One, but we have to get there first.

"I know we are in a great position – I'm not stupid – and I know we can only throw it away.
"But until we are there, the most important thing for me is the next game and that is Tranmere at home.

"If you take your eye off the ball for just a second you leave yourself open and I don't want that to happen.

"We have 79 points at the moment and what I'm concentrating on is having 82 after tonight's game."

Latics are getting slightly short on numbers as they chase promotion glory, with Jason Jarrett and Leighton Baines both missing training yesterday because of illness.

If Jarrett isn't better by tonight, his place on the bench might have to go to Peter Kennedy who has himself only just returned to training after a bout of chickenpox.

Jewell said: "We've one or two minor niggles from Saturday but the main worry is that Jason Jarrett is ill.

"I don't know whether he will fit to be involved in the squad or not, and he didn't train on Sunday or yesterday.

"As for Peter, I don't think he is ready yet, but we might have to put him on the bench.

"I don't really want to do that because looking at him in training he doesn't look ready for a game."

Kennedy has missed the last three games, with Steve McMillan taking the opportunity to re-establish himself in the left-back position.

Another option if Jarrett misses out is to bring midfielder Mike Flynn back into the picture.

Tonight's opponents Tranmere are chasing a play-off place, and know that a victory coupled with results elsewhere would move them into the top six.

With former Latics strikers Simon Haworth and Stuart Barlow in their squad, and Mathias at the helm, Jewell believes is should be a good game.

Atmosphere

Jewell said: "I think Tranmere will fancy their chances coming here and there should be a good atmosphere.

"There is a history between the two clubs in that a couple of their players and Ray have been here.

"They're on a good run at the moment and one thing Ray demands from his sides is hard work.

"The young lad Iain Hume and Simon Haworth have been scoring goals so it has the hallmarks of being a decent game."
