Roberts eyes new deal

His current deal runs out next summer but the 24-year-old striker would be more than happy to commit his future to Latics.

Roberts has started the last two games in place of the suspended Andy Liddell, and while he wasn't among the goals against West Brom and Cardiff, his hard work on the pitch has caught the eye.

He gets another chance up front at Plymouth on Saturday before Liddell's ban comes to an end, and would dearly love a goal in Devon to give boss Paul Jewell a selection headache.

Roberts :: Deserves a chance
The Welsh international said: "My contract ends in the summer and I'm playing to try and earn a new one here.

"If that doesn't come about, hopefully someone else will have a look at me, but I would definitely be happy to stay at Wigan because I love it here.

"At the end of my contract, I will have been here for three-and-a-half years, and I have enjoyed that time and built up a good relationship with the fans.

"The way football has gone, it is not nice to be out of contract – there are friends of mine in the game who have come to the end of contracts and not got a new club.

"Ideally, I would like to know where I'm going to be sooner rather than later, more for my security.

"I'm 24, have a girlfriend and want to settle down, but you can't do that when you don't know where you're going to be six months down the line."

Roberts has been pleased with his form since returning to the starting line-up, and would love to find the back of the net on Saturday to round off his time filling in for Liddell.

He added: "I know Andy is back after the weekend and this has been my chance to show what I can do," he said.

"I'm more than happy with the way things have gone and it would be brilliant to score on Saturday.

"There was a chance of me going to Plymouth on loan last season, but it all came down to it being a bit too far away.

"I went to Hull in the end which was a fair trek itself, but not half as far as Plymouth!

"It is going to be a hard game down there, but we go on the back on some good performances and I think they'll be wary of us."

The Worthington Cup clash against Manchester City will take place on Tuesday, November 5 (7.45pm), and is being screened live by Sky Sports, the club have confirmed.

Ticket details will be announced after talks with City, although it is unlikely to be all-ticket for Latics fans.
