Playing on

A bout of tonsillitis left him doubtful for tomorrow's visit to Wycombe, but he reported back for training yesterday after three days in his sickbed.

Since being registered by Latics following his £1.2m move from Bristol Rovers 11 months ago, the Duke hasn't missed a league game.

He played three at the end of last season and has started all 31 of their Second Division fixtures this term.

There hasn't been much respite for him in the cup competitions either, with the LDV Vans Trophy game at Notts County the only time he hasn't been included in the squad.

Manager Paul Jewell said: "The Duke trained for the first time this week yesterday.

"I've had a chat with him and he told me he's feeling fine now and really looking forward to playing at Wycombe."

Ellington's team-mates are also raring to go after the postponement of last week's game at Crewe left them twiddling their thumbs.

But with nine games coming up before the end of March, the fortnight's break could prove a blessing in disguise.

Latics' preparations have been hit by the cold snap this week, with much of the training being done indoors.

This afternoon, though, they were going through their paces at Birmingham City's training ground on route to Buckinghamshire.

Jewell said: "The lads are champing at the bit because we've only played twice in the last three weeks.

"Unfortunately we have not been able to train properly and yesterday was the first time this week we worked outdoors.

"Even then it was still slippy and a little bit dangerous on the surface, so we didn't do that much.

"We're training at Birmingham later today and hopefully it will be a decent surface there and we can do a lot more.

"It's good that we've got the Soccerdome available to us for indoor training but you're limited in what you can do because it's only a small area.

"You can't do any team play in there, although you can get some leg work into them."

Despite Latics' inactivity last weekend, they didn't lose any ground to the chasing pack and travel to Adams Park nine points clear at the top.

Jewell has warned there will be no let up from his side and knows they'll have to be on top of their game to beat a Wycombe side beaten just once in eight games.

He said: "We have to keep our nerve because football is littered with teams throwing big leads away.

"Some people might think two draws at home is a blip, but I don't see it that way.

"Our performance against Blackpool was excellent and against Cheltenham the week before we were just unlucky.

"There is nothing wrong with the way we are playing and hopefully we can pick up three points tomorrow."

Jewell is expected to name an unchanged side to face Wycombe, with recent signing Jimmy Bullard continuing alongside Tony Dinning in centre midfield.
