Jewell: Demands a win
The Second Division leaders play three games in seven days, starting with the Boxing Day visit to Port Vale.

That is followed 48 hours later by a home clash with Swindon before Notts County come to the JJB Stadium on New Year's Day.

Jewell sees the festive season as an opportunity to pick up nine valuable points in Latics' quest for promotion.

Jewell said: "I gave them Sunday off but that will probably the last day off for about a fortnight.

"These days it is more a squad game than ever before and we will need everyone available for the games coming up over Christmas and New Year.

"We haven't the biggest squad here and it was nice to get Andy Liddell and Lee McCulloch back at the weekend.

"Against Huddersfield, Scott Green was dead unlucky to be left out of the squad as was Mike Flynn."

Latics go to financially-troubled Port Vale on the back of six successive league wins – a run which equals the club record set in the 1987-88 season.

They lead the table from second-placed Cardiff by four points and a maximum points haul at Christmas would strengthen their hand.

The 50 points collected from 22 games is also slightly ahead of the boss' pre-season target of two points per game.

Jewell could be tempted to tinker with the starting line-up which faced Huddersfield.

Lee McCulloch and Andy Liddell returned from injury at the weekend and will be pressing to step up from the bench.

McCulloch replaced Peter Kennedy on the left-wing during the second half against Huddersfield and may have done enough to earn a start at Vale Park.

Jewell will definitely have to change things for the Swindon game on Saturday, with midfielder Jason Jarrett serving a one-match suspension after totting up five bookings.

Latics will be assured of a big following at Vale Park on Boxing Day, with as many as 2,000 fans – many in fancy dress – planning to make the trip.

That should generate a good atmosphere – something Jewell would like to sample at home games too. Last Saturday's game with Huddersfield attracted a 6,013 gate – slightly below Latics' average home game this term – and at times you could hear a pin drop.

Jewell said: "Sometimes you wouldn't think we are top of the league because there is no atmosphere – that is because the stadium is so big.

"I'm not going to knock the supporters because it costs a lot of money to watch football, especially at this time of year.

"But you do sometimes have to pinch yourselves that we're up there."
