Paper Talk: Young Ace

The Wigan Athletic manager believes the teenager is good enough to play international football at Under-20 or Under-19 level.

Having seen Gary Teale called up to the Scotland squad and Lee McCulloch put on standby, Jewell reckons it is about time the English FA paid a visit to Wigan.

He said: "Scotland manager Berti Vogts watched our match on Saturday but I don't know where the English lads are.

"I seriously think they should be watching Leighton when I see some of the people who are getting in the Under-20 and Under-19 squads.

"I might send a map of Wigan to the people at the English FA."

Baines put in another good performance on Saturday as Latics beat Derby County 2-0 at the JJB Stadium.

It was the first win at home for two months, Bradford being the last side to leave empty handed on December 13.

Nathan Ellington and substitute Lee McCulloch were on target late in each half and the victory kept them in third place, hot on the heels of top two Norwich and West Brom.

Jewell said: "It was a massive game for us and a massive three points to collect.

"Last week at Ipswich we put on a really good show on a fantastic pitch and everyone was saying nice things about us.

"There is a danger in football that you start believing what people say, but I thought the players went about their job very well.

"It was a scrappy game because our pitch doesn't allow for anything else.

"But we played some great stuff, and while we had to rely on John Filan to make two fantastic saves, I felt we were full value for the three points.

"I knew Derby would make it hard for us by playing five across the back, and that is testament to us.

"Scoring just before half-time was great for us, and it came just after we should have had a penalty.

"Maybe we had a bit of luck for the second goal because a lot of referees would have come down in favour of the keeper.

"I was pleased for different reasons after the game than I was at Ipswich the week before.

"I couldn't emphasise enough beforehand how different the game was going to be.

"Last week was played under lights and almost had the feel of a cup tie about it.

"Saturday was all about the three points, it didn't matter how we got them. I felt we were better than Derby and deserved to win the game."

Jewell was pleased with the home debut of Alan Mahon who set up Ellington for the first goal.

He said: "It was a great bit of play from Alan, whipping in a fantastic ball for the Duke to score.

"We have been lacking someone to do that and Alan is a very intelligent footballer.

"He's quite an elusive player, sometimes coming off the wing to join up with the front two."

Jewell reported no fresh injuries from the game, explaining he had substituted Jason Roberts because the striker looked tired.
