Nineteen-year-old Baines was flying out with Peter Taylor's squad to Vienna today ahead of Friday night's European Championship qualifier against Austria.

It's then on to Poland for a second qualifier next Tuesday, and it's hoped the left-back will see action at some point.

Wright, who plays on the other flank at Latics, is greatly impressed with what he's seen of Baines and has tipped him for a bright future.

He said: "Leighton is a very good player and I've been impressed with him since I came to the club.

"The lad has got a great left foot, he's a great defender, and In think he really deserves his call-up to the Under-21s.

"Having played at Crewe, I'm used to seeing young players coming through and maturing like him.

"I hope he does really well for England if he gets his chance and then continues playing well for Wigan.

"He's a quiet lad off the pitch but it's on it where it matters, and I think Leighton will be fine."

Wright has been an ever present in the Latics first team for Championship games this season following his summer switch from Crewe.

That was his first transfer in the game, and the Warrington-based defender is enjoying the experience at Wigan.

He said: "I'm still settling in here but I enjoy playing in the team and it's completely different to Crewe.

"The tempo is a lot quicker and we go after teams – at Crewe I'd been used to teams coming after us.

"At Crewe it was total football and we only had one way of playing which was passing and moving with a slow build-up.

"Here, we play football in the right areas and when we have the ball, we go forward very quickly.

"It's a different approach but that is not a problem."

While it's early days, Wright is confident that Latics can be up there in the promotion shake-up.

They currently lead the Championship on goal difference, and will go into a busy September programme full of confidence.

Wright said: "We have enough quality to give it a go and I think we can be there or thereabouts. If we keep performing how we have been doing, we should be up there.

"But to do that we must carry on working hard and no one is getting carried away by the start we've had."
